LONG

(1872-1957)

Philippe Long (1872-1957) was a French painter, born and raised in Bordeaux, where he also passed away. He received his artistic education at various academies, including those in Paris and Florence. After completing his studies, Long worked as a teacher at the admiralty of Bizerte and later in Bordeaux.

Long gained recognition as a marine and colonial painter, with a particular focus on scenes from the French colonies. He spent thirty-five years making yearly trips of two to three months to Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, and the Sahara oases, among other places. During these trips, he recorded his experiences and impressions through his art, as well as through recitals that he published in newspapers, magazines, and pamphlets.
